YOUR CARE

At Ascent Health & Performance, we take an active, evidence-based approach to treatment—whether you’re recovering from an injury or looking to optimize your performance. Our goal is to get you out of pain, restore function, and keep you moving for the long haul. We have cash plans for both but typically insurance only covers active care.

What is the difference between ACTIVE care and PASSIVE care?

What is Active Care?

Active Care is for those dealing with pain, restricted movement, weakness, numbness, or other dysfunction caused by an acute injury or chronic condition. This phase of care focuses on addressing the root cause of your issue—not just temporarily relieving symptoms.

Included in Active Care:

✔ A thorough evaluation with planned re-evaluations to track progress

✔ Chiropractic care and manual therapy to restore movement and function

✔ Functional rehabilitation and corrective exercises

✔ Other supportive techniques tailored to your condition

Goals of Active Care:

  • Pain Relief: Reduce symptoms and restore function
  • Injury Prevention: Maintain improvements and build long-term resilience
  • Performance: Help you return to full activity—and beyond

What is Performance Care?

Performance Care (often referred to as maintenance care) is for those who want to stay ahead of injuries, improve movement quality, and prevent setbacks. The top predictor of future injury is previous injury, and the second is asymmetry—which is why regular care helps keep you moving efficiently and pain-free.

Due to the daily wear and tear of life, work, and activities, we all tend to default to inefficient movement patterns and poor posture. Performance Care helps correct these tendencies before they lead to bigger issues.

Why Performance Care Matters

Insurance companies typically do not cover maintenance care because they don’t consider it “medically necessary.” According to insurance guidelines, care is not deemed necessary when you:

  • still have pain but are no longer making measurable improvements
  • no longer have pain or functional limitations
  • are seeking care for injury prevention rather than symptom management
  • want professional guidance on how to actively maintain mobility and strength

PERSONALIZED CHIROPRACTIC CARE

Active Release Techniques (ART): A Proven Soft Tissue Therapy

Active Release Techniques (ART) is a highly effective soft tissue treatment used to break up scar tissue, reduce muscle tension, and restore normal movement patterns. By targeting muscles, fascia, tendons, ligaments, and nerves, ART helps relieve chronic pain, improve mobility, and support faster recovery. At Ascent Health & Performance in Anchorage, we use ART alongside chiropractic adjustments to treat sports injuries, overuse syndromes, and postural strain at the source.

Personalized Chiropractic Adjustments with Diversified Technique

At Ascent Health & Performance, we use the Diversified chiropractic technique, guided by training through the Motion Palpation Institute, to deliver precise, personalized adjustments. This evidence-based approach emphasizes joint motion assessment and functional movement analysis, ensuring each adjustment is tailored to your unique biomechanics—not a one-size-fits-all treatment. The result? Greater effectiveness, better outcomes, and care that’s built around your body’s needs.

OUR EXPECTATIONS OF YOU

We’re committed to providing the best possible care, and your experience is a two-way street. Here’s what we expect from you to ensure you get the most out of your treatment:

  • Arrive on time. If you’ve filled out your paperwork online, show up right on time. If not, plan to arrive 10-15 minutes early so we can get everything squared away before your session.
  • Dress for movement. Wear athletic or comfortable clothing that allows you to move and gives us access to the area of complaint. Avoid thick sweatshirts, Carhartts, or restrictive clothing—they make it harder for us to assess and treat you properly.
  • Plan for the right amount of time.
  • Exam visits (your first appointment and subsequent injuries) take 45 to 60 minutes.
  • Standard treatment sessions take 30 to 45 minutes.
  • Maintenance or Performance visits are quick—10 minutes in and out.
  • Book the right appointment for your condition. If you’re unsure what type of visit you need, reach out and ask—we’re happy to help you get scheduled correctly.
  • Do your homework. The exercises and rehab we give you are just as important as what we do in the clinic. Consistently doing your exercises at home allows us to progress your treatment, get you better faster, and keep you out of pain longer.
  • Communicate with us. If something isn’t working or you’re struggling with your rehab, let us know! The more feedback we have, the better we can adjust and optimize your treatment plan.

HELPFUL FAQs

What is chiropractic care?

Chiropractic care focuses on diagnosing and treating musculoskeletal issues, particularly those involving the spine, joints, muscles and nervous system. It includes hands-on adjustments, manual therapy, soft tissue techniques, and rehabilitation exercises to restore movement, reduce pain, and improve function.

Do chiropractors only adjust the spine?

No. While spinal adjustments are a core part of chiropractic care, we also treat shoulders, hips, knees, ankles, elbows, wrists, and other joints. Our approach includes soft tissue therapy, rehabilitation exercises, and mobility work to improve overall movement patterns.

Is chiropractic treatment safe?

Chiropractic care is a safe, evidence-based approach to improving musculoskeletal health, but like any healthcare intervention, it carries some inherent risks. While most patients experience relief and improved function, potential risks include temporary soreness, stiffness, or mild discomfort after treatment. In rare cases, adverse effects such as muscle strain, joint irritation, or dizziness may occur.

Serious complications are extremely rare but may include exacerbation of pre-existing conditions, rib fractures in osteoporotic patients, or, in exceedingly rare cases, vascular incidents related to neck adjustments. At Ascent Health & Performance, we take a thorough, evidence-based approach to minimize risks, ensuring treatments are tailored to your individual needs.

Before beginning care, we conduct a comprehensive evaluation to assess your health history, identify any contraindications, and discuss the best course of treatment for your condition. If you have concerns about specific risks, we encourage open communication so we can make the best decisions for your health and safety.

What conditions do you treat?

We treat a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions, including:

  • Back and neck pain
  • Headaches and migraines
  • Sciatica and nerve pain
  • Shoulder, knee, and hip injuries
  • Sports injuries and overuse conditions
  • Joint stiffness and mobility issues
  • Postural imbalances and movement dysfunctions
What can I expect during my first visit?

Your first visit includes:

✔ A thorough assessment of your movement, posture, and pain points

✔ A discussion of your health history and goals

✔ A combination of manual therapy, adjustments, and rehab exercises based on your specific condition

✔ A treatment plan designed to help you recover and stay pain-free

Will I get adjusted on my first visit?

In most cases, yes—if it’s safe and makes sense based on your evaluation. But sometimes, soft tissue work, rehab exercises, or mobility drills are a better starting point before jumping into an adjustment. And for some people, adjustments just aren’t their thing—and that’s totally fine.

We see adjustments as one tool in a much bigger toolbox. Sometimes, it’s the right tool for the job; other times, something else will get better results. Our job is to have enough tools at our disposal to get you moving and feeling better—whether that includes an adjustment or not.

Do adjustments hurt?

No, adjustments should not be painful. You may feel pressure or hear a popping sound, but most people experience immediate relief and improved movement. If you're nervous about adjustments, we offer gentler techniques to ensure your comfort.

How many visits will I need?

This depends on your condition and goals. Acute injuries may resolve in just a few visits, while chronic issues require progressive care and strengthening to prevent recurrence. We always aim to get you better as quickly as possible and provide rehab exercises to maintain progress.

No single treatment plan is exactly the same as the rest. Your physiology, the duration and severity of the injury, diet, exercise, sleep and genetics all take part in recovery. Our treatment plans are usually between 3 and 12 visits spread out with 2-3 visits per week max.

How long do treatments take?

Initial exam & treatment: 40-50 minutes

Standard treatment sessions: 20-40 minutes

Maintenance & performance visits: 10 minutes

What if I don't want to be adjusted?

That’s completely fine! We use a variety of manual therapy techniques, modalities, mobility drills, and rehab exercises to get results. We’ll work with you to find the best approach for your body and comfort level. Adjusting is just one tool in a comprehensive tool box. In other words, it's not a fix-all - we refuse to continually pound a square peg into a round hole. Even if you dislike adjustments, we have other tools that we will use to get you feeling better.

Do you accept insurance?

We offer both insurance-based and cash-pay options. Some insurance plans cover chiropractic care, while others do not. Our team can help you determine your coverage and discuss affordable options for care.

What's the difference between Active Care and Maintenance Care?
  • Active Care is focused on treating pain, injuries, and movement dysfunctions. It includes adjustments, rehab exercises, and soft tissue work to restore function.
  • Maintenance Care (or Performance Care) helps prevent future injuries, optimize movement, and keep you performing at your best.

Insurance typically covers Active Care but does not cover Maintenance Care, as it is considered non-medically necessary. We offer affordable options for those who want to continue care beyond pain relief.

Can I see a chiropractor if I'm not in pain?

Absolutely! Many of our patients come in for preventative care and performance optimization. Chiropractic treatment helps maintain mobility, correct imbalances, and improve movement efficiency—so you can stay ahead of injuries instead of reacting to them.

Can chiropractors improve sports performance?

Yes. Chiropractic care can:

  • Enhance joint mobility
  • Improve muscle activation and coordination
  • Reduce injury risk
  • Aid in faster recovery

Athletes of all levels—from weekend warriors to professionals—use chiropractic as part of their performance routine.

Do I need a referral to see a chiropractor?

No referral is needed! You can book an appointment directly and get started on your recovery or performance plan right away.

Are you willing to work with my medical doctor?

We value our relationships with local medical providers and believe collaboration is key to getting you the best care possible. With your permission, we’ll send your doctor a report after your initial assessment to keep them in the loop on our findings and how we’re helping you. We’ll also provide updates on your progress and discuss any needs that go beyond our office.

If your doctor has specific recommendations for your care, we’re more than happy to connect—whether that’s through a phone call or a direct referral to our office. Our goal is to work together to get you moving and feeling better, faster.

What if my condition doesn't improve?

At Ascent Health & Performance, our priority is getting you the right care from the right provider—whether that’s us or someone else. If your condition would be better treated by another medical or healthcare professional, we’ll make sure you get where you need to go. We’ll communicate directly with the right provider to ensure a seamless transition and the best possible outcome for you.
